Fatal motor vehicle accidents are down even though we’re driving more

According to preliminary data analyzed by the National Safety Council, there was a 4% decrease in motor vehicle-related deaths in 2023. Importantly, this decrease occurred even as miles on the road by drivers increased by 2.1% from 2022 and 3.9% from 2021, the NSC reports.

The estimated mileage death rate for 2023 is 1.36 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled — a decrease of 6.2% from 2022 and down by 9.3% compared to 2021 figures. These statistics show that while progress is being made, motor vehicle accidents remain a serious issue.

“The most dangerous thing most people in our country do in a single day is use the U.S. roadway system. This public health crisis is an atrocity that must continue to be addressed,” a spokesperson for the NSC told Insurance Journal.

Common causes of motor vehicle accidents

Various factors contribute to motor vehicle accidents. Distracted driving, including cellphone use while driving, remains one of the leading causes. Additionally, speeding and reckless driving significantly increase the risk of accidents on our roads. Other factors like impaired driving due to alcohol or drugs also contribute to this problem.

The importance of legal representation in motor vehicle accident cases

If you’re involved in a motor vehicle accident, having proper legal representation can make a significant difference in how your case is handled and its outcome. Legal professionals can help you understand your rights and obligations under the law, guide you through the complexities of insurance claims, and advocate for fair compensation if you’ve been injured or suffered property damage.

Remember that every case is unique and requires careful consideration based on its specific circumstances. It’s essential to seek advice from legal professionals who are well-versed with local laws and regulations related to motor vehicle accidents.
