Don't let winter weather keep you from a safe trip

Winter will continue its hold on New Jersey for at least a while longer, which means that you could experience more inclement weather. Snow, sleet and ice can make the roads treacherous and jeopardize your ability to get from point A to point B safely.

Even though you may drive in these conditions every year, it never hurts to review safe traveling rules for winter weather. Otherwise, the smallest oversight or mistake could lead to disaster.

These tips could save your life

Driving in winter weather requires concentration and certain adjustments to your normal driving habits. Below are tips that serve as a reminder of how to do that when the weather gets bad:

  • It may seem like a no-brainer, but slow down. Reducing your speed could give you the precious seconds and distance you need to stop and avoid a crash.
  • Resist the urge to slam on your brakes. It's not always easy to keep your wits about you, but braking in these conditions requires slow and steady pressure to keep you from losing traction and sliding.
  • Don't stop if you don't have to do so. If you have enough room, continue rolling ever so slowly until a light turns green to keep from spinning your wheels as you attempt to get moving from a complete stop.
  • When you do need to slow down or speed up, try to do it as slowly as possible. This helps you maintain traction on the road.
  • Refrain from trying to speed uphill. You will more than likely end up just spinning your wheels and getting stuck or sliding back downhill.
  • Also, refrain from stopping as you go uphill if possible. You may not be able to get moving again.

The best option would entail simply staying home when the weather makes the roads dangerous. However, if you are like many of your fellow residents, that may not be a viable option. If this is an option for you, take advantage of it. Your life isn't worth an unnecessary risk.

If you follow all of these rules, but a driver around you fails to do so. You could end up unable to avoid a collision. When this happens, you may suffer serious injuries that require a lengthy recovery. You may be able to pursue all of the compensation you deserve for the inevitable financial losses you will experience through the filing of a personal injury claim.
